People are now turing to the sales of burial plots to get out of depth and maintain their cost of living. Because cemeteries don’t usually buy back plots, people are now turing to internet sites to auction this particular asset in order to pay bills.
Internet grave-resale sites — such as Plot Brokers, Plot Exchange, Grave Solutions and the Cemetery Registry — say they’re not only seeing big increases in listings but hearing more stories of financial desperation.
“We usually hear, ‘I’m selling because I hate that son of a gun and the only thing we’ve got together is burial plots, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to be buried next to that so-and-so,’ ” said Bob Ward, cemetery property specialist with the Cemetery Registry. “Or, ‘Grandpa bought these plots in 1932, and I’ll be damned if I’m going back to New Jersey to be buried. I live in Arizona.’ Now we’re hearing, ‘I’m losing my house.’ Or, ‘I’m out of work.’ ” -Washington Post
Freakonomics reported one auctioneer selling her plot on ebay for over a million dollars.
Elsie Poncher is auctioning her late husband’s crypt on eBay, hoping to use the proceeds to pay off the $1.6 million mortgage on her house in Beverly Hills. As NPR reports, Poncher has an advantage over most grave sellers: the crypt she’s selling is above Marilyn Monroe’s. The original winning bid for $4.6 million fell through, but the runner-up bid will likely be in the multi-million neighborhood.
Save starving children? Feed the homeless? Or maybe sell off the hubby’s gravesite for a few mill? Didn’t really appreciate the snoring over the past 30 years anyway. Hmmmm…..
