On average, our schedule is full from the moment we open our eyes right until we lay our heads on the pillow. Have you ever stopped for a moment during the day to pay attention to how you are breathing? If you haven’t lately, you may want to check in with this essential life tool.
Learning how to breathe more naturally and efficiently, the way our bodies were designed to breathe, can have a powerful influence on our metabolism and overall sense of wellbeing. Concentrating on healthy, natural breathing makes us feel better physically, emotionally, and mentally. This has a beneficial influence on the quantity and quality of our exercise, the way we look and feel about ourselves, the kinds and quantities of food we eat, the amount of energy we have, and so on. All of this can result in losing or even gaining weight because the right balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in our cells has a beneficial influence on our metabolism
When I took notice of my own overall breathing patterns during a breathing exercise, my breathes were shallow and lifeless. I did some research and decided it was time to learn a better way of breathing. One week later, I can already feel a difference in my energy level and decrease in anxiety. Awareness is the key!
I now take at least 5 minutes a day to “breath correctly.” And by just taking that time for breathing in the morning, I feel like I’ve had a great natural, positive, energy booster that begins my day!
Try this simple exercise, and with consistent effort, the new way of breathing will come natural to you and you will begin to reap the benefits immediately:
1. Find a comfortable and quiet place to lay down.
2. Begin by taking breathes normally without trying to change anything. Be aware of your breathing rhythm.
3. Place your hand on your belly and take a deep breathe through yout nose. When you reach the peak of your inhale, hold your breath for a moment.
4. Exhale through your nose and feel your hand flat on your belly again.
5. Once again hold your breath for a moment after you fully exhale, and suck your tummy in toward your spine.
Do this excercise 5 to 10 times. Don’t push yourself too hard right away. As time goes on the new way of breathing will become natural and with consistent practice, your breathes will be deeper, energy levels will increase and your anxiety level will decrease.
