Brite Intelligent Tip: Need Major Surgery? Go to Thailand…

Brite Intelligent Tip:

Once a slightly scary medical niche, overseas surgery has taken off to a remarkable degree, fueled not only by the continued rise in health care costs but also by an economy that is creating an army of underinsured Americans looking for bargains.

Americans save 70% by doing operations this way even when adding in airfare and hotel. Medical tourism has doubled this past year with roughly 1.5 million Americans heading abroad for medical care in 2008. Traveling to all kinds of countries like Turkey, Thailand, or Costa Rica for procedures ranging from perfunctory dental work to six-hour bypass surgeries. Fans of overseas care say third world medicine isn’t for the faint of heart. Yet its hard to argue the savings, surgeries can cost as little as 10% of the equivalent services in the US. How do they lure us over? Well, the marketing is simple, hospitals pile on plush hotel-style amenities. South Korea, for example, is building a Health Care Town, a 370-acre beachfront oasis filled with hospitals and luxury apartments for foreign patients and their families.

In these tough economic times, it might be worth checking out. Just be sure you have a translator with you. You don’t want to wake up from surgery and scream “I said gland not hand.”
