Best Wines for Mother’s Day and Graduation
By Sara Batterson
Unless you want to hear mom sharing your most embarrassing moments after a few glasses of heavy cab, I’d stock up on the recommended lighter wines for these upcoming celebrations. She will enjoy the light, slightly sweet flavor of each selection while remaining the darling hostess with the mostest…
For the light weight wine drinkers, check out Villa Rosa’s Moscato D’Asti. For an Italian sweet wine, it’s very low in alcohol (5.5 proof) but very flavorful. It goes great with sharp cheese, fresh cut fruit and chocolate. Best of all, most of your guests will enjoy it. Great for the pickiest of foodies and wine snobs!
I come from a family of wine snobs where dry wines were always in and sweet wines were always out. Sweet wines always translated to “sugar water in a box.” Somehow Riesling was grouped into that same category. I never understood why until now. There are two kinds of Riesling: Qualitatswein and Pradikatswein. Qualitatswein is composed of 35%-40% Riesling with the other 60%-65% white wine and sugar water. Pradikatswein is 100% Riesling and completely different from any “blue bottle” Riesling you’ll find in the grocery store. It doesn’t taste sweet or sugary – it just leaves a hint of peaches on your palette. Best of all, these kinds of Rieslings have a shelf life of 10 to 20 years. And do I dare say, a friend and I enjoyed this particular bottle, Armand, within an hour – yummy (and dangerous)!
*Disclaimer, your mother will embarrass you after more than one glass. This wine is liquid chocolate mixed with Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz and is 14% proof. The label might as well read, “For a good time drink me.” A ton of these chocolate wines have hit the market lately but what separates this one from the others is that it’s made from natural chocolate. If only the calories could be removed – then we’d all be in big trouble
